Tower of Akmolinsk fortification

Building dates back to the 1839-1840. It was located at the place of the present gate of central stadium named by Kh. Munaitpasov (corner of Kenesary and Victory Avenue).
Its top was built of pine logs laid on adobe walls. ln its upper part here were small embrasures for rifle shooting and in its lower part one big embrasure for cannon. On the whole the fortification consisted of wooden constructions enclosed with a high wattle and daub wall, a revetment and a deep ditch filled with water.
At that time the number of fortification inhabitants made up a little bit more than 300 people. By 1876 Akmolinsk fortress lost its defensive significance and was abolished. Akmolinsk was officially proclaimed to be a chief town of a district on July 16, 1863. Gradually Akmolinsk became a transshipment point at the crossroads of ancient trade routes. In 1890 the population there came to 5,640 people.
The tower as the last reminder of the fortress existence was destroyed in 1921.
