Akmolinsk mosque

The mosque was built in 1895. There was one of the richest merchants of the town Nurken Zabirov who financed its building. People called this mosque Tatar (Zabirov was a Tatar) or Green because it was painted green. It was situated at the cross-road of present Abay str. and Republic Avenue.

After closing and reconstruction there was Pioneer House. Then three-storeyed block of flats was built there. However, stone gate of former mosque, pillars, iron wrought grates of the fence remained safe to our time.

The building of the first mosque in the town in 1844 was financed by sultan K. Khudaimendin. With the arrival of every new caravan thanksgiving services were held in the mosque. On other days Muslim from neighbouring and distant auls came to the prayer. As time went by, merchants, craftspeople and newly arrived folk settled about the mosque. The wooden mosque was considered to be one of the sights of Akmolinsk. After the wooden mosque burnt down at the beginning of the 20th century the “Tatar” mosque was built.
